Can you help me find the title to this movie?

I saw a very intriguing film on demand back in 2005. It was a 70's art film shot in New York. All I can vividly remember is that the movie was centered around the lives of a group of young adults, and their precarious male friend. This troubled man steals two penguins from the Brooklyn zoo for his girlfriend. He visits her house uninvited frightening her. In a rage, he kills one of the penguins in front of her beside the family pool, and runs off like a mad man. The cinematography, and story telling is simply amazing. Now if only I could remember the film title...
